My grandfather always told me to do everything in time. He was a man of few wasted words, and this was one of his quiet wisdoms — not a lecture, just a truth he had learned from a life lived close to the land. The hay can’t be made in winter. There is no one who gathers mushrooms in spring. Nature has a strict and unforgiving plan, and it does not negotiate. Miss the moment, and the moment is simply gone. No second chances, no catching up — just the empty field and the lesson.
Nature, in its own way, is the most honest teacher there is.
But human nature is a bit different. We are perhaps the only creatures on earth who genuinely believe we can bend time to our will. We say we can catch up with the lost time — and perhaps, in some ways, we can. A conversation postponed can still be had. A dream delayed can still be pursued. An apology held back too long can still, sometimes, find its way home.
Yet there is a quiet exhaustion in it. Because finishing the unfinished is not the same as doing things in their proper time. It’s heavier, messier, shadowed by everything it carries — the guilt of the delay, the energy spent not on the task itself but on the catching up. It’s like trying to live a whole hour within a single second. They say it’s possible. And maybe technically it is. But at what cost?
I feel so tired of it sometimes. Tired of the rushing, the compressing, the sense of being perpetually behind an invisible schedule of my own making. There is a particular kind of fatigue that comes not from doing too much but from doing things out of their natural time — like a flower forced to bloom in the wrong season. It opens, yes. But something essential is missing.
My grandfather knew something we keep having to relearn. That there is a rhythm to things. That respecting time is not laziness or rigidity — it is wisdom. A quiet act of alignment with the world as it actually works.
Everything at the proper time. Not as a pressure. As a grace.
